Curious Boxes: A Nordic-Inspired Romantic Home Design

A Unique Residential Design by Tommy Hui

The user of the household is a newlywed couple. The designer takes the homonym of the word "meeting" and uses "box encounter" as the theme of the whole design. Each area in the house is surrounded by different colors, just like a few different ones. The boxes are combined. This design symbolizes the encounter between the head of the household and the family. From the moment they met, they have been together to the present and have achieved this warm home.

The residential design project, named "Curious Boxes," created by renowned designer Tommy Hui, is a unique and romantic interpretation of a Nordic-inspired home. The design revolves around the concept of "box encounter," symbolizing the meeting between the head of the household and the family. Each area of the house is surrounded by different colors, resembling distinct boxes that come together to form a harmonious whole.

The dining room, for instance, features pink and pink-green walls, complemented by pink and gray furniture, creating a romantic and Nordic-style atmosphere. The kitchen, on the other hand, incorporates a half-height glass door and a square-shaped compartment, resembling a transparent glass case. This design choice not only separates the dining room from the kitchen but also allows light to circulate on both sides, making the kitchen brighter.

To combat the challenge of limited floor space, the designer opted for white ceilings and walls to increase brightness. Chandeliers were intentionally omitted, with light troughs and spotlights serving as the primary sources of illumination. This design decision alleviates the pressure of the low floor and creates a more spacious and open feel in the dining room.

The master bedroom is dominated by a white color scheme, with a white wardrobe, bed, and dressing table, creating a serene and minimalist box. In contrast, the second bedroom adjacent to the living room features a warm wood-colored high-definition TV cabinet, which becomes the outer shell of the bedroom, forming another cozy box within the overall design.

Tommy Hui's "Curious Boxes" design successfully combines different boxes to clearly divide each area, enhancing the separation and distinctiveness of each space. The unique use of colors, materials, and lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the entire home.

The "Curious Boxes" project was completed in Hong Kong between July and November 2018. The design received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its innovative approach to residential design, "Curious Boxes" by Tommy Hui showcases the power of creativity and thoughtful design in creating a warm and harmonious living space.
